Dermatological testing assesses a product’s potential to cause irritation and sensitisation (allergic reactions) on the skin. For a product to be dermatologically tested, there is a process involved called repeat-insult patch testing, and it’s conducted on human volunteers.
Most hair smoothing or straightening products release formaldehyde gas, a known human carcinogen as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, into the air during the hair straightening or smoothing process. Used for preserving products for a longer time. Do your eyes and nose get watery, red, and irritated when you shampoo your hair? Chances are, this is because of the formaldehyde used in the formula. Formaldehyde-free shampoos are much gentler on your skin and eyes and healthier for your hair as well. They do not irritate the skin or cause related allergies.
DEA and TEA are used to balance out pH levels in haircare products. As well as posing a health risk, DEA and TEA can also destroy natural oils like keratin in your hair (a common theme in this article!) This chemical may cause hair loss, brittleness, and damage. Why do so many of these additives strip your hair of their natural oils? It’s a clever strategy: if your hair can’t produce its own oils, you’ll rely more and more on expensive products to make your hair look sleek and shiny.
It’s commonly added to skin care and hair care products as a moisturizing agent because it’s cheap to manufacture. They repel water. They usually give acnes and allergic reaction.
Short-chain alcohols are often used in styling products such as hairsprays and hair gels. These type of products contain Alcohol Denat. (i.e. ethanol) to achieve their fast drying properties on hair. While applying the product on hair the alcohol evaporates immediately and mainly the polymers stay on hair and bring the hold. On the other hand, long-chain fatty alcohols, which have totally different properties and appearance are found in moisturising shampoos and conditioners. Here they add “slip and glide” effects for easier detangling, and are designed to hydrate and improve the condition of the hair with a more even cuticle.Alcohol-free products are safe, free from chemicals, and work great for color-treated hair. They don’t dry out your hair but instead keep your hair looking healthy and nourished.
Over time, silicone can also build up on your hair, resulting in a dry feel and dull appearance. You may even notice that your hair becomes weaker and more prone to breakage. And if you’re using a form of silicone that isn’t water-soluble, it can be really hard to remove it with a regular wash. You splurge on an expensive shampoo and conditioner in the hopes that it will transform your dry, brittle locks into silky smooth tresses. And it works! For a few weeks, your hair feels as soft as a cloud and shines like a diamond. But after a month or so of using your new shampoo and conditioner, your hair starts to revert back to its former dull, dehydrated appearance and it keeps getting worse.
Sulfates are usually added into shampoos for their cleansing action. The dirt-infused oils on your scalp cling to the sulfate molecules, which get washed away in the form of lather when rinsed with water. However, along with unwanted grease, these sulfates over-extract the natural oils from your scalp and hair, thus leading to scalp dryness and cuticle damage. This is where sulfate-free shampoos with natural and alternative surfactants come into play by keeping your natural oils intact, while gently cleaning-up the dirt from your scalp.
Phthalates are used as gelling agents in some shampoos. They are also found in mousses, hairsprays and conditioners. They help lubricate and soften other substances, increase spreadability, enhance absorption, and help to make fragrances last longer. They can increase risk of asthma and allergies, can Increase cancer risk.
Parabens are used to increase shelflife. Parabens are known to disturb your hormone balance and mimic the activities of the estrogen hormone, which can lead to an increase in cancer-causing cells. Due to this, parabens have also been linked to causing breast cancer. Dermatologists also believe that paraben can cause various fertility and reproductive problems and advance ageing.
