What's My Hair Type?

What's My Hair Type?

The haircare industry has exploded. From heat protectants to bond repair treatments, you’ve got a world of products out there, each targeted, specific, and with promises. You know you’re ready to hit that checkout button during a payday sale… But before you dip your toes into that pool, you’re faced with the all-important question - what is my hair type? And no, unmanageable isn’t a category (nor should it ever be!)

So let’s break down the ABCs - quite literally - of hair types and more.

Your individual hair type is a combination of multiple factors, some of which are:

  1. Hair texture (straight, wavy, curly)
  2. Hair porosity (low, medium, high)
  3. Scalp type (dry, balanced, oily)

Hair Texture

Straight, wavy, curly - seems simple enough, right? But what about when you have both waves and spirals in your hair? And that awkward middle ground wherein your hair’s straight but your ends curl up? Don’t fret - our hair chart’s going to demystify it all!

The first step - let your hair air dry, naturally, without any stylers, any scrunching, or manipulation. Does it fall straight, into an ‘S’ shape, or is your hair full of loops and spirals? Watch the video below to know your hair type.

You can check out our clean, minimal straight, wavy, and curly hair regimes here. And yes, our wavy and curly hair regimes are 100% curly girl approved

Straight hair might require a regime that adds volume; if you’re wavy haired, you might be seeking a way to prevent build up or an oily scalp; and curlies - your hair type is often fragile, prone to more breakage. But do you really need to follow a 10000 step routine? The answer to that lies here! (Short answer: no)

Okay now that you know if you’re a 2a or a 3c or a 1b, let’s move on to the next criteria - porosity.

Hair Porosity

How to check for hair porosity? Well, there are some methods that involve 33202349288 steps and there’s one simple rule of thumb, when it comes to checking your hair porosity. Take one strand of your hair and cut it, and immerse it in a glass of water. As long as you can see this, don’t worry about this journey.

If your hair strand lies at the top of the glass of water, you may have low porosity hair, which basically means it takes longer to get wet and dry. Sometimes, that causes a lot of frizz because products tend to sit on top of the shaft. Regular usage of our Hair Food will help you get the nutrients in, minus any weighing down of your hair.

If your hair’s in the middle of the glass, you’ve got a healthy balance on the porosity scale so enjoy!

When you have high porosity, your hair is prone to drying out super quickly and becoming brittle. If this sounds like your hair, please avoid heat styling or extreme manipulation-based looks and styles. Instead, apply our Midnight Elixir for at least a month and watch overnight magic take over!

Scalp Type

You’ve got your hair texture, your porosity type, and now it’s time to assess your scalp. Since dandruff, dryness, grease, and build-up often present the way, you could have a hard time figuring what’s what. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there. Mindlessly scratching at your scalp and ending up with some white substance on your nails - what is it, what should you do?

Dry scalps may develop flaky skin at the scalp as well as other scalp problems. This requires you to reset your scalp and strands with a mild shampoo like the Happy Hair Serum Shampoo, which is gentle yet effective, cleansing without stripping your scalp further.

An oily scalp feels greasy or moist to touch and can lead to a host of problems, in the long run. Also, let’s not forget the discomfort! You may also have flat roots and no volume at the crown. Use our Hair Food to nourish your scalp in a way that’s quick, shows results in the long term, and effective!

With all of this information, you’re equipped to go ahead and set food into the world where everything is possible and real, including a conditioner that’s almost water-like yet super potent.

A bonus tip: if you have had a lot of sun/environmental/bleaching damage, consider investing in Bond Repair treatments that work parallelly along with your preferred products based on your hair type.
